Having chapathi daily??!! umm that's fine when we have something really yummy for side dish right ?? Yeah ... that's how a person who hates eating chapathi daily feels .This was not only the reason for trying this with whole moong dhal instead of the usual moong dhal.......main reason was..... According to Indian astrology each (navagraha)planet and days are associated with particular grain.Usually for navaratri my amma used to make sundal with those grains associated with that particular day . For example.Saturday (planet shani/saturn) associated with till, Thursday(planet guru/jupiter) associated with Channa(chickpea), Wednesday(planet bhuda/ mercury) I wanted to do Whole moong dhal on wen as according to astrology geen gram dhal is for bhudan.Ok coming to the point .It was a Wednesday and usually i make Green gram dhal. And this time wanted to try something like dhal makkani using whole moong instead of Black urad dhal.It was equally tasty .
INGREDIENTS:
Whole moong dhal-1 cup
Onion-1 medium size(finely chopped)
Tomato-1big(finely chopped)
Ginger- 1 small piece crushed and 1 tsp chopped
Garlic-2 crushed
Bay leaf-1
Cinnamon-1
Clove-2
Coriander- chopped to garnish.
Curry leaf- few
Curds-1tbp
Milk-1/4 cup(approximately)
Water- to cook dhal
Red chilli powder- 1tsp( to taste)
Coriander powder-1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Cumin powder-1/4 tsp
Salt- to taste
METHOD:
1)Soak Whole green gram dhal for 4-5 hrs and pressure cook .
2)Heat oil in a pan and add bay leaf, cinnamon, clove ,curry leaf and chopped ginger .Add Onion and saute for few minutes. Add crushed or ground Ginger garlic and saute till raw smell disappears.Add all the powders(chilli, coriander, cumin) and saute well.Add Tomato and salt and cook well.
3)Add the cooked whole green gram dhal and enough water. Now here comes the ingredients which i actually had no intentions of using in this but just for small adjustment i had to use curds and milk. Yeah... unfortunately or fortunately my new chilli powder was very hot for us so to reduce this i used milk initially and again when i tasted for checking... something made me feel adding curds would make it better, so added 1 tbs curds and mixed well and let it boil and to my surprise the outcome was so tasty that we liked it and and both of us ate just the gravy alone :)
