APPALAKOOTU(PAPAD DAL)

This is one of our favorite dishes for chapathi.My amma used to do using papad. this recipe is bit different corm her's . she does not use chilli powder and clove pr cinnamon . but as my hubby likes these i usually this way . This photo above was made using papad. Any way this is a different dhal variety that you may want to try
INGREDIENTS:
Papad/Appalam- few
Green Gram dhal- 1/2 cup
Onion-1
Tomato-1
Ginger-small
Garlic-2(girnd or crush ginger and garlic to paste)
Clove-2
Cinnamon-few
Bay leaf- 1
Chilli powder-to taste
Salt -to taste
Saunf- 1/4 tsp
Dhaniya powder-1/2 tsp
Oil
Corriander and curry leaved- few
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Water- as needed

METHOD:
  1. Wash and pressure cook 1/2 cup dhal with about 1 cup water in pressure cooker and keep.
  2. Heat oil  add mustard.When it splutters add, bay leaf, cinnamon, clove  and curry leaves.
  3. Add onion and saute.When it turns transperent add ginger garlic paste. Saute well till raw smell goes
  4. Add tomato and salt and cook well.
  5. Add chilli powder, coriander powder , saunf powder(If using whole saunf , add it along with bay leaf) and turmeric powder and saute well for couple of minutes
  6. Add pressure cooked dhal and add water id needed( This has to be watery as the papad when added will absorb the water.)Cook for few minutes
  7. remove from flame and add chopped corroander and crushed Appalam/papad and serve with chapathi or poori or rice.
NOTE:Adding few crushed papad before serving will give nice a crunchy taste.
